Molyvothikes – A present for someone unknown

molyvothikesA while ago I had a proposal from Dremel Hellas to do a workshop at TEDX Chania and without too much thought I replied yes. When I found out about the subject of TEDx though, I was troubled. The subject was Xenos (The Unknown)

“Xenos is about the unknown. The unknown people, whose impact in our lives cannot be expected nor measured. It’s about the conditions we have not lived in but still attract or frighten us. It is about those concepts we named “limits”, because we didn’t know any better. Xenos, as in the future we have yet to live, the future that scares and excites us at the same time.”

So I couldn’t just do something irrelevant. In a brainstorming with my boyfriend, we thought about Molyvothikes (pencil cases).

“At the Molyvothikes Workshop, we will create a pencil case, a simple DIY project with the use of wood and some electric tools. The pencil cases we will make, will not be for us, but for a stranger. These strangers are the refugee children to whom we will send the pencil cases along with all the necessary material (pencils, pens etc). To make this small gift even more personal  we can bring school materials to go along and also write a message at the bottom of the pencil case to the unknown receiver.”

And like this, at Chania a story begins; a story called Molyvothikes that I hope we could continue together in Athens as well as other places in Greece. At this point I am in venue search, so if you have any ideas, I would love to hear them. So feel free to send an e-mail at [email protected].

Last but not least, this project has the support of Dremel and BOSCH and without them the idea itself wouldn’t even exist. .

The 10 ugliest Christmas trees ever

So you know, Christmas is all sprinkled with fairy dust and sugar and everything is just perfect and beautiful… OR….IS IT?

Yes, the truth is that very often the excessive compulsive phase of Christmas can lead to crimes against good taste and against humanity in general. In this context, I decided to present to you the best-ugliest Christmas trees because everyone (and every tree) must have a chance in this world.

Definitely a tornado met with this tree. There is no other logical explanation.

– So this year I say, make the tree minimal. Just a branch and very few ornaments. – Agreed! But let’s also put a giant totally irrelevant sock!

ATTACK OF THE CHRISTMAS PINK!

If anyone in your close environment has gone missing, I suggest you took a look inside this tree. Perhaps they are in there.

Come on now, really?

These people apparently decorated their pet peacock. I’m sure they also take it out for walks.

– Yes! I’m into fashion! Of course this is what I would decorate!

This is so ugly, I actually like it! It’s so awesome!  <3

That’s it from me! Feel free to send me at [email protected] or at the FB Page, any ugly Christmas Decoration you want,  and if I gather many things I’ll make one more Ugly Christmas post so we can celebrate xmas tackiness in all it’s glory!

Berlin. Maker Faire. Dremel.

I don’t even know where to start!!

As you probably already know (if you are a fan of this fantastic blog!!) I had the privilege and joy to be invited at the Maker Faire Berlin by Dremel. Besides me, my european company was Tuomas from Finland, Fabrizzio from Italy and Rene from Germany. All of us, one very different from the other, but still all Makers, were asked to make something inspired by the concept “DIY Techlaration”.

From the left, me, Tuomas, Fabrizzio, Lukas and Fanny (the 2 last from Ketchum Pleon) arrived at the Maker Faire!

welcome

Willkommen!

That is, don’t throw away your old computer. Use the parts to make something! My idea was simple and colourful. See the video below to get the idea.

The day that we were making our projects live, we were all a bit nervous (we had a live streaming). We were separated in couples; at the beginning Fabrizzio and Tuomas and then Rene and I. Fantastic Istvan (from Dremel HQ) asked us questions and made us forget the stress, relax and have fun! So that’s how we rooooolled! (Cheers Istvan!!)

OF COURSE there were the smiles and support of both the teams of Dremel and Ketchum Pleon that were amazing people, great company and I hope to see them again soon! (Fanny, our invitation still stands!)

Here, with Fanny having a great time!

The Faire was amazing. Robots everywhere. 3D printing (we had one at the Dremel stand)! People making things using technology either for new stuff or traditional objects. Families, babies, kids, older people, everything you can imagine.

Ok, I’ll stop writing, the rest in pictures!

A favourite product package became a magnet

frigde_magnet_intro

This is a very simple DIY project that took me about 5 minutes .

So, OK I admit buying the specific olives just for the packaging. I have already used it as a kitchen utensils holder and a pencil holder and now the time has come for it’s final spot in the house. There were already some magnets on the fridge (used to be part of touristy magnets that broke) so I just took 4 and glued them on the packaging with the hot glue gun.

I know I will probably need to fix this mess of magnets on the fridge, but now is not the time. Or is it?

7 tips for a cool renovation

anakainisi-renovation

As you probably saw recently, I renovated (DIYed actually) my kitchen! During this project, that involved a lot of “wax on wax of” (that is, I couldn’t move my arm with all this painting) , I had plenty of time to think. When I did something wrong, I had the time to think what I could have done to avoid it. And when I did something  right, I thought that this knowledge might help someone else. So, I gathered all of these thoughts and I present it to you. Hopefully there is something in there that could help you on your next project.

  1. Find time (and set a deadline). Think of your project, calculate the time  you think is needed for it and then add half of that time. For this period cancel all your outings. You are not going anywhere until you’re done! Also, try to finish in time. Setting a deadline helps you get moving faster.
  2. Organize the space. Whatever the project is, organized space is definitely needed. Sadly though, the space doesn’t make it self, so you’ll have to take care of that.  For example: are you painting a room? OK, take everything outside the room. Place them somewhere in a neatly way in order for them not to take too much space. Make sure the space you put them is not a central spot of the house. In other words don’t block the way with stuff.  It may suit you to leave something somewhere/anywhere for a while but TRUST ME, it will blow up in your face. You could step on it, trip on it, fall, swear etc. Also, that’s a way to avoid home accidents. 🙂
  3. Make a list. Right after you have the idea on the project, get a pen and paper and write down all the things you will need. There’s nothing worse than realizing that you don’t have something you need, on a Sunday morning when all stores are closed. So think, think, think and get organized.
  4. Get good allies (aka tools). The tools are the most important thing in a project. Without them, we can’t do anything. Don’t settle with something that is “Yeah, OK, this will work too” If -lets say- you have a lot of unscrewing/screwing to do, a simple screwdriver isn’t enough. You will need to find a drill that will save you an incredible amount of time.
  5. Find your patterns.  Give time to yourself and find a way that works for you. Make your own patterns if the project it’s self needs one. Don’t waste time trying things. Find what works for you and get it done.
  6. Don’t take too many breaks. Try to set a target before going on a break and finish it. Especially if the break involves beer or something, you’ll see that setting a target makes you want to finish it quicker.
  7. Pick your battles. If something is too hard, you can’t do it, or it’s just not worth the work, then don’t do it. Or don’t spend too much time on it.

That’s it from me! Good luck on your next project!
