Soul Collage

ntoulapa

Just a frame (without the art!)

DO YOU WANT TO KNOW HOW TO GIVE THIS ANTIQUE EFFECT TO A FRAME? THIS IS YOUR CHANCE!

This frame was sleeping for many years on the highest shelf at my dad’s workshop. It’s made from gypsum and wood, and when I found it, it was a terrible mess. Painted gold of course, looking like s**t. The framed artwork was not really my taste (a farm man with a bunch of cows around in a green field), so I tore it out without further thought.

The steps

Clean the frame really really well. Especially if there is a lot of detail in the embossing, you could use the air spray we clean the keyboard with.

Choose the color you like and start painting it. You could use plastic colors, spray paints, oil based colors. I used enamel paint which was not such a good idea (you’ll see later on why). Wait for the paint to dry very well.

κορνίζα2After that, it’s time to use my favorite product, glaze. Glaze is what will highlight the details, leaving your basic color intact. For this specific surface I used 5 tablespoons of glaze which was mixed with half a tablespoon of black tempera. You can mix the glaze with any water based color you wish. (That’s what’s perfect about glaze! You can make it any color you like! )

glaze

Then you give the frame one coat of glaze. Make sure the glaze reaches the details.

Leave it for about ten minutes to settle and then with a dump piece of fabric, start taking off very gently. You don’t want to remove the whole the whole thing, you want it to remain in the details. But then again you can actually do whatever you want depending on the shade you want to give to your object. (I don’t have a picture of this stage because my hands were dipped in paint and couldn’t grab the camera!)

For example, I like the great antithesis between black and white. Here’s the result. As you can see there is a little of gold left.. It’s because I used enamel paint and when I started removing the glaze, some of the paint was removed as well.

I hanged it on the wall 🙂

Now in general…

Tip 1: Glaze is great for these kinds of projects because it has a very long drying time, hours really. So it gives you the possibility to form it as you wish.

Tip 2: It’s a bit expensive (in Greece at least), something like 15 euro/kilo, but in general you don’t use lots of it, so it lasts for a lot of time.

That’s it!

Give chopper a chance!

Nooooooo! Don’t throw away the chopper that you found in a drawer, that must be the same age as you and doesn’t chop to save it’s life!

Well the truth is I did throw it away, but then, 5 minutes and a creative twist later, I picked it up from the trash. Maybe it’s the Tim Burton influence, or maybe the “we don’t throw stuff away” that my mom taught me. Either way, the chopper’s life was saved.

The idea came automatically: Spray paint + various objects = Love For Ever.

I wrapped the handle with a bag and took it out on the balcony. I laid a couple of newspapers down and gave it 2 coats of spray paint to create an even look. Pay attention to the directions on the bottle, especially if you haven’t used spray paint before.

So now the chopper stands proud over the orange painting my friend Eva made, giving the necessary macabre twist to the decoration.

And now, after the chopper, other objects followed. The ladle you see below wasn’t meant to be thrown away, but since I had a couple more, I said “Ok, how many ladles does a kitchen need?” Then, nail, hammer and hanging on the wall.

(now look, if you are careful not to put the colored part in the chicken soup, you can actually use it as well! )

That’s it! 😀

The Batman Table

So OK, its Christmas time and I had decided that I would make all the presents. One of them was the batman table I made for my sister who had just moved in with her boyfriend. We had 2 of them at home, and you know every kid from Greece born from 1975 to 1985 that respects itself, must have these kind of tables at their parents house.

The procedure was rather simple. Sander and then enamel paint, color ice white. After that I got online and started looking for stuff. I was thinking something with a comic twist, but then without lot of thought, I started gathering only Batman stuff. I printed the pictures and decided on the collage. I used white glue for paper and fabric mixed with water. I glued the papers down with a brush and then gave it 2 more coats of glue. This created a good surface so that you can actually use it as a table and place things on it. My sister though is afraid to use it because she thinks it will get destroyed, but I just tell her that if this happens then we’ll just make it over <3

Headboard from window shutters (oh, how original!!)

A few years back, I had the windows replaced at my house. I took out the wooden ones and put pvc windows and shutters. But, the wooden ones were so pretty that I didn’t have the heart to throw them away. Turns out it was a good move. I kept them around for some time (making the house look like a construction site once again) until I figured what to do with them. And then I decided to use some of them to make………………….. drum roll……………..a headboard! (hm, I have already said that on the title, haven’t I?)

Procedure:

I gave them a sanding and I removed the handles.

pantzouri1

I picked a nice off white color and gave them one coat on one side.

patzouri2

After they dried I used sanding paper on various spots to make the wood appear.

Finally I just placed them one next to the other on the wall and put the bed in front of them. Simple things! And this way I didn’t throw the shutters that I loved so much!
